Reprisal - reclaim your history

I’m really enjoying this new take on the original version of Populous that Brandon mentioned at Juegos Rancheros last Sunday. Really lovely pixel art with a neat tilt-shift effect on it that gives it that ‘making ants fight in a shoebox’ feeling.

juegosrancheros.com — FANTASTIC ARCADE presents JUEGOS RANCHEROS: SOUTH BY NO QUARTER edition.

A post-apocalyptic food-eating-contest card game, a dungeon that grows more complex the drunker you get, the game of tennis, reimagined, and an ancient bloodsport-brawler-ballgame: this Sunday, June 3rd, at 4PM at a very special twelfth edition of JUEGOS RANCHEROS at The Highball, we’ll be bringing you all of these at once, as we present the games of NYU’s NO QUARTER.

Lone Survivor

Terry Cavanagh posts about Lone Survivor, the idiosyncratic game by Jasper Byrne that was featured in last week’s Juegos Rancheros Indie Roundup.

You can’t talk about this game without talking about Jasper, because it’s impossible to play this game and not be overwhelmed by the personality of the person who made it. It seeps though every detail, every flaw and moment of brilliance – it’s a personal labour of love by its creator. It’s incredible to see something with this kind of singular vision actually come together, and be as good as it is. It’s something I aspire to with my own work.

Terry is the wunderkind behind VVVVVV and Hexagon and should be unfailingly heeded on all game recommendations.

Lone Survivor is now 20% off on Steam until Friday!

Jeff Minter’s Deflex

I came to appreciate Jeff Minter in the early 90′s with his acid-soaked Atari Jaguar offerings, Tempest 2000 and the Virtual Light Machine. Lately he’s been porting a number of his older Spectrum arcade-style games to iOS- Deflex has a lineage that goes back all the way to the Vic 20, but his new iOS version feels like it has been made with a touch device in mind. It’s weird, “Minteresque” hypnotic fun that will probably annoy anyone sitting around you.

Help Kickstart an iPad game brought to you in part by Wiley Wiggins and The Octopus Project | The A.V. Club Austin

The first product of Austin-based Karakasa Games, Thunderbeam! looks to bring retro-styled sci-fi action (and some moral dilemmas) to the iPad, but the developers need your donations to make that happen. As per standard “>Kickstarter procedure, there are some neat giveaways involved at varying levels of contribution (T-shirts, silk-screened posters, a limited-edition Playbutton mp3 preloaded with The Octopus Project’s soundtrack)—but the real prize is knowing that you helped get an innovative, challenging, and (assumedly) fun video game off the ground and onto your iPad.
