Processing and Arduino in Tandem | creativeLIVE.com

O’Reilly is offering a fee web streaming course on using the open programming language processing together with the open hardware platform arduino, starting at the end of August. I’ll be bleary from Fantastic Fest during part of it, but I enrolled anyway. Processing and Arduino are both powerful ways of creating just about anything under the sun, from multimedia installations to robots, but they are designed with beginning programmers and fast-prototyping in mind. I’m a math-deficient visual thinker, and I never would have imagined I would be able to get into programming until I discovered them.

The Octopus Project, Tia Carrera, and Mother Falcon at Mohawk Patio | Music | Events | The A.V. Club Austin

This saturday at Mohawk – OP kicks out jamz.

Perpetually cast in bright, sparkling colors whether it’s floating along on buoyant pop hooks or diving into grungy, digital dissonance, Austin’s The Octopus Project adds an intoxicatingly human edge to a genre that’s too often about cold, technical precision—one dictated by its credo, “Music Is Happiness.” It’s also one of the most visual bands working today, often accompanied by lights and projections that crystallize the eternally unspooling Stan Brakhage films its songs only suggest. The band took its “visual music” concept to the next logical conclusion with this year’s Hexadecagon, a multimedia/multidimensional collaboration with Wiley Wiggins. Expect tracks from the Project’s full-fledged follow-up to 2007′sHello, Avalanche here—though Tia Carrera threatens to obscure whatever creepy-cute projections accompany those new tunes in a metallic purple haze. That band’s distorted heft, meanwhile, will be tempered by the baroque swells of Mother Falcon’s yearning chamber-folk.

Digital Harmony: The Life of John Whitney, Computer Animation Pioneer

A little biographical page about John Whitney Sr. – The inventor of motion graphics, and inspiration for the current piece of video I am working on for The Octopus Project. (kind of a wrap-up of the final song from Hexadecagon). Whitney passed in ’95, but managed to work with both Charles Eames and Saul Bass during his life.
